At Halter, we're unlocking the connection between humans and animals, starting with cows and then expanding to other animals. Driven to revolutionise farming, our world-first technology helps farmers break free from the time-intensive constraints of conventional farming and empowers a more sustainable future for farmers, their cows and our land. Halter is giving farmers the freedom to spend more time with their families, the technology to increase production and meet the growing demand for food and the data to help them care for their cows, which we know is paramount for farmers.

Founded in 2016, Halter has developed a revolutionary farm management system. We fit our solar-powered GPS-enabled smart collars to each dairy cow. We then equip farmers with a simple App for managing their cows. This system enables farmers to remotely shift, virtually fence and proactively monitor their cowโ€™s health, feed and behaviour - all through their phone. Scaling rapidly onto farms across New Zealand, we have the privilege of working alongside exceptional farmers including some of the largest farms in the country. We care deeply for our farmers and their cows, with our customers heavily involved in product development and animal welfare core to our culture.

Our work is turning heads. In 2021, Halter won in two categories at the NZ Hi-Tech Awards and this year, we have been nominated for another two. Our Board comprises tier 1 Silicon Valley investors who have backed the world's best technology companies such as SpaceX, Tesla, Airbnb and Spotify. Weโ€™re also fortunate to have Rocket Lab CEO, Peter Beck, as an investor and Board member. We hire the world's best people and provide an epic environment for them to thrive in. Our culture is distinctive; we care about high performance, about each other, and we're obsessed with making a difference for our customers.

About the role

This is a fixed-term contract for students who are interested in some full-time work at one of NZโ€™s fastest growing companies. The role will run from the 28th of August through to the 9th of September OR until you are no longer available.

We are looking for hands-on technicians that will help prebuild radio towers. This includes builders, sparkies and/or general handy people that want to branch out and help build a terrestrial network to talk to all our cows.

Our technicians and site installers work to deploy high-quality infrastructure to provide connectivity across our farms. Prebuild technicians build the infrastructure before passing it on to the site install team. As a prebuild technician, you will be hands-on, working with tools and equipment to build and test Halter radio towers. Your responsibilities contribute to the overall production and launch schedule.

This role is well suited to a generalist who is passionate about innovation and technology, handy with a toolbox and doesnโ€™t mind getting their hands dirty helping out on the farm!

What your day could look like

  • Building on-farm infrastructure (radio towers) that will provide network connection
  • Assembling and testing infrastructure at Halter HQ in our state of the art Auckland hardware lab
  • Actively supporting and improving the pre-building processes for Halterโ€™s on-farm infrastructure. Weโ€™re always looking for ways to improve and be more efficient.
  • Conducting stock takes for materials and supplies
  • Maintaining and influencing a high personal standard of personal health and safety, ethics, and compliance throughout the launch process

What weโ€™re looking for

  • You must have epic hands-on skills and a willingness to learn (A trade qualification as a builder, plumber, electrician or similar would be a huge plus but no mandatory)
  • Someone who is experienced with hand and power tools
  • The ability to read, understand and follow drawings and instructions
  • A highly self-motivated individual who is eager to learn and grow
  • Someone who has experience with electronics, knowledge of electrical components or working with steel would be a HUGE plus

Why our team loves working at Halter

  • The excitement, risk, and reward of a high-growth technology start-up.
  • The pride of joining an iconic New Zealand technology company growing successfully on the global stage.
  • The opportunity to work with and grow alongside a dynamic, and highly talented team with diverse backgrounds.
  • The opportunity to supercharge your career in a supportive and caring environment.
  • Our ideas are truly valued, we are able to move fast, and our impact is real.
  • State of the art, dog-friendly office thatโ€™s been thoughtfully designed right in the heart of Auckland city.
  • Delicious snacks and drinks are available for your daily flow.

Halter is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace โ€” a place where we can each be ourselves and do the best work of our lives. Weโ€™d love to chat to see if youโ€™ll be an epic fit!

If this opportunity sounds like you, please apply below by sending through your cover letter explaining why youโ€™re excited about this role and working at Halter, along with your CV, and weโ€™ll be in touch!

No two days are the same! Being on-farm, there is a practical as well as a theory aspect which I loved. Jobs would range from carrying out practical tests on-farm or on customer farms for both your and other team members' projects. Meetings would be conducted on a daily basis between software/firmware engineers in order to develop an addition to the collar. Trips to Auckland would be taken which allows face to face meetings, relationship building and a good team environment. Responsibilities outside of our designated projects ranged from practical tractor work cleaning up around the offices, to conducting and running farm team days to bridge the gap between Auckland staff and the farm.

As I am an intern in the production team, my work involves managing inventory, sourcing components for the collars, solving production issues, and communicating with the factory. I also work on writing assembly and testing documentation for the factory to follow. A big project I worked on during my summer internship in 2021/22 was writing software to forecast the average cost of the collar over the coming year. The work is quite varied from day to day, and there's something new to work on nearly everyday.

Pros and cons of working at Halter

Pros

  • You get to work with a bunch of extremely talented individuals who get things done and support you along the way. Honesty and feedback are some of the things I love the most - you work in a culture that fosters a self-improvement attitude. The office is nice and you get free snacks and drinks, there are plenty of company events which means you it's not all work and no play! And finally, obviously the game-changing technology you'll be working on. Modern software stack and relatively low-tech debt mean you won't find yourself doing a boring job of maintaining legacy code.

  • The people! The people and culture at Halter are unlike any company I've worked at or heard about. The work is so dynamic and that's owing to the very inclusive, talented, and committed people that make the teams. Their energy is infectious and makes you want to continually better yourself and ask questions and know more about your work and the field.

  • Great team environment with very skilled people who all work together to achieve a company-wide goal. Halter is a very fast-moving company that uses all resources available to move fast-paced into a challenge. Within the farm guidance team, everyone was very accommodating and open to the fact that someone starting needs assistance understanding the product and his role within the company, with this they were super helpful and forthcoming!

Cons

    • Being a startup, I believe the processes/documentation around some things are quite undeveloped, you find yourself needing to ask around for a few things (some of which you may never find the answer to, because a said person may no longer be working here anymore). People are busy and tend to have quite a lot on their plate.

    • There are always so many interesting events going on to distract you. This is also a huge positive, as no two days look the same!

    • Because the work you do is so exciting and rewarding, it can sometimes be hard to switch off and strike a good balance between working and destressing. Being mindful of that and taking regular breaks, and making time for hobbies helps me maintain that balance.
